Rare AU58 1876 Half Eagle, Centennial Souvenir

1876 $5 AU58 NGC. The rarity of the 1876 half eagle, with a mintage of only 1,432 business strikes plus 45 proofs, is overshadowed by the 1875 half eagle, one of the classic rarities in U.S. numismatics that was produced to the extent of only 200 circulation strikes plus 20 proofs. While the 1876 is rarely seen in any grade, according to Garrett and Guth, the authors reminds us that the date is one of the few With Motto early half eagles occasionally seen in Gem condition, perhaps owing to its status as a souvenir of the U.S. Centennial celebration.
This coin offers semiprooflike reflectivity over the distraction-free yellow-gold surfaces, and a decent strike save for light softness on the eagle's neck and feathers. As an indication of the rarity of this issue, both NGC and PCGS combined have certified only nine pieces in AU58, exceeded by 13 coins at both services and including the inevitable duplications (6/07).(Registry values: P3)
