Description
1876 AU 55. A very rare date in all grades. Only 1,432 business strikes were produced in this centennial year, the lowest production of any With Motto half eagle. Most business strikes are prooflike, and so it is with this coin. The fields still retain much reflectivity with some mint frost intermixed as well. The striking details are a bit softly defined on this piece with weak definition on the eagle's neck and not quite complete details on the hair curls of Liberty. Minimally abraded with no distinctive marks on either side. A rare and desirable issue and a real find in Choice AU condition. This piece has been in a major European gold collection and off the market since before the Second World War.
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WW, PCGS# 8339, Greysheet# 8923)
Weight: 8.36 grams
