Description

1876-CC Half Eagle, Conditionally Rare AU55

1876-CC $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-A. The only known variety. The mintage of 6,887 pieces was the lowest of any Carson City half eagle issue. Like most of the Carson City half eagles of the 1870s this issue was heavily circulated, leaving most surviving examples heavily worn or damaged. About Uncirculated specimens are very scarce to rare. Only two Mint State examples are certified, an NGC MS61 and a PCGS MS66.

The reddish-gold surfaces of this Choice AU offering retain a fair amount of luster. The design elements are well-defined save for the usual softness on Liberty's hair bun and the eagle's neck, The reverse has no singularly relevant abrasions. On the obverse, faint pinscratches are noted at 9 and 12 o'clock and on Liberty's neck. These do not unduly detract. Census: 7 in 55, 9 finer (11/13).
