Description

1876-CC Half Eagle, Elusive AU58
Rare in All Grades

1876-CC $5 AU58 PCGS. Ex: Nevada Collection. The 6,887 half eagles struck in 1876 Carson City represent the lowest yearly total for that denomination and mint. Most survivors (and there are few in any grade) are well-circulated, usually averaging no more than VF35 to XF40. This near-Mint State PCGS-graded example is among only three such submissions in this grade, and only one PCGS coin is finer, the incredible MS66 coin, ex: Clapp-Eliasberg, that most recently sold in the Battle Born Collection (Stack's Bowers, 8/2012), lot 11007, for $477,000. NGC data report seven submissions in AU58 and a single Mint State example, an MS61.

This coin boasts an impressive array of toning shades for a gold coin, ranging from canary-yellow through reddish-orange, ruddy cherry-red, lilac, and brownish-charcoal, complementing the considerable remaining luster and a decent strike. A few scattered ticks are of little consequence. A prominent die lump on Liberty's throat, just below the jawline, is typical of these dies. Population: 3 in 58, 1 finer (7/16).
