Description

1876-S Half Eagle, AU53
Infrequently Seen

1876-S $5 AU53 PCGS. The 1876-S five dollar, from a mintage of only 4,000 pieces, is rare in all grades. PCGS and NGC have seen a total of 51 pieces, including a solitary Mint State example, an NGC MS65 that was once part of the Garrett Collection. The rarity of this issue is apparent from its infrequent auction appearance. Indeed, we have offered this date at auction only 20 times over the past 21 years.

Apricot-gold and reddish patination cascades over both sides of this AU53 example that displays traces of luster in the protected areas. The design elements are well-defined except for minor strike softness on portions of Liberty's hair and the eagle's neck feathers. Neither side reveals significant abrasions. Population: 2 in 53, 4 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WY, PCGS# 8341, Greysheet# 9063)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
