Description

1876-S Half Eagle, VF25
Among the Scarcest S-Mint Issues

1876-S $5 VF25 NGC. CAC. David Akers wrote, "I consider this to be one of the rarest and most underrated Half Eagles in any condition." That comment was made more than 40 years ago, and the same analysis is true today. Just 4,000 pieces were struck. While this issue ranks above the 1864-S and 1862-S in the number of recorded half eagle auction appearances, it is not significantly more available than those great S-mint rarities. Most examples exist in low grades, including many with impairments. This CAC-endorsed coin is a pleasing VF25. Dappled lilac and orange accents enliven the tan-gold surfaces. Only a few minor marks and abrasions are seen on either side. Diagnostically, all 1876-S half eagles show an enlarged ear canal and a small punchlike mark on the earlobe, with the Small S mintmark either partially or fully filled. Census: 2 in 25, 18 finer. CAC: 1 in 25, 6 finer (9/21).
