Description

1876-S Half Eagle, XF40
Elusive S-Mint Issue

1876-S $5 XF40 NGC. CAC. Despite the Centennial year, the San Francisco Mint managed a production of just 4,000 Liberty half eagles in 1876, making the issue elusive in all grades today. This impressive XF example displays attractive apricot-orange toning over both sides along with moderate wear. All 1876-S fives show a circular punchmark on the earlobe. The few other marks and abrasions are minimized by circulation. Considering that the Smithsonian has but a VG-10 specimen in its vast collection, this seldom-seen, mid-grade representative takes on added importance. A true series rarity, often overlooked by even well-informed collectors. The high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. Census: 3 in 40, 15 finer. CAC: 2 in 40, 4 finer (10/24).(Registry values: P3)
