Description
1876-S Half Eagle, XF40
Elusive S-Mint Issue
1876-S $5 XF40 NGC. CAC. During our nation's Centennial
year, the San Francisco Mint managed a production of just 4,000
Liberty half eagles, making the issue difficult to procure today.
This impressive XF example displays original apricot-orange toning
over both sides along with moderate wear. All 1876-S fives show a
circular recession on the earlobe, the exact center of the obverse.
Marks of any notice are confined to a slightly curved line beneath
the right wing. Considering that the Smithsonian has but a VG10
specimen in its vast collection, this seldom-seen representative
takes on added importance. The high quality within the grade is
confirmed by CAC. CAC: 2 in 40, 4 finer (6/25).(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WY, PCGS# 8341, Greysheet# 9063)
