Description

Important Near Mint 1877 Half Eagle

1877 $5 AU58 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint struck every gold denomination aside from Stellas in 1877, but only the Double Eagle is readily available. The Gold Dollar, Quarter Eagle, Princess, Half Eagle, and Eagle are all formidable rarities, and the two gold Half Union repose in the Smithsonian. The business strike 1877 Half Eagle has a mintage of just 1,132 pieces. The present example has a bright band of prooflike luster across both borders, and the strike shows softness only on the eagle's neck. A small scuff beneath the sixth star is mentioned to identify any future appearances. Population: 12 in 58, 4 finer (11/05).
