Description

Pleasing 1877-CC Half Eagle, AU55

1877-CC $5 AU55 NGC. From a mintage of only 8,680 pieces, the 1877-CC is an uncommon coin in all grades, and most examples seen are in the VF-XF range. In overall rarity, Doug Winter rates the 1877-CC tied for eighth in the 19-coin series. In high-grade rarity, it ranks seventh. Mint State examples are prohibitively rare, and a nice AU example is the best a realistic collector can hope for.
The coin offered here shows only slight wear on the highest points of the design. The strike is better than average, with Liberty's hair and the eagle's neck showing only typical softness for the issue. A couple of planchet flaws on the obverse rim between 7 and 9 o'clock appear to be as made. The surfaces are remarkably free of distractions, and much original mint luster remains. Overall, an extremely attractive example of this rare date. Census: 13 in 55, 6 finer (8/08).(Registry values: P3)
