1877-S $5 AU58 NGC. The 1877-S is one of many difficult low mintage San Francisco issues struck before 1878, when West Coast production of half eagles kicked into a higher gear. NGC has certified a total of 125 pieces from the initial mintage of 26,700 pieces, generally in XF and AU. The present near-Mint representative has superior quality for the issue since wear is nearly absent and the devices and legends teem with luster. Scattered obverse marks are appropriate for the grade. Census: 9 in 58, 2 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P3)
