Description

1877-S Five Dollar, MS60
Mint State Rarity

1877-S $5 MS60 PCGS. A run of low-mintage half eagles from the San Francisco Mint ended in 1877, with just 26,700 pieces minted. The 1878 mintage of S-Mint half eagles increased nearly six-fold. Even so, the 1877 P-mint and CC-mint counterparts saw even smaller mintages, and as a result the 1877-S five is underrated through all grades. Mint State survivors of all three Mints are rare both conditionally and in an absolute sense. This MS60 example offers shining yellow-gold surfaces and crisp detail. A total of just four Mint State examples are reported by PCGS, while NGC lists only a single piece in Uncirculated condition. Population: 1 in 60, 3 finer (5/19).
