Description
Very Rare 1877-S Half Eagle, MS61
1877-S $5 MS61 NGC. Like all San Francisco Mint half eagles struck prior to 1878, the 1877-S is very rare in Mint State. In fact, as of (6/07), NGC has certified just two examples as Uncirculated, both as MS61. Neither has appeared at auction in the past decade. While a Condition Census Dahlonega, Charlotte, or Carson City five would cost tens of thousands of dollars, such an expenditure may be unnecessary for the better value '77-S. This is a highly impressive example with clean fields and a pleasing strike. Only the fletchings show noticeable incompleteness. Encapsulated in an older generation holder.(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25X3, PCGS# 8344, Greysheet# 9065)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
