Description

1878 Five Dollar, MS64
First 8 Repunched, Rare Any Finer

1878 $5 MS64 PCGS. This issue represents an exponential increase in the Philadelphia Mint's production of half eagles, from only 1,132 coins in 1877 to 131,720 pieces in 1878. While examples are understandably available in lower Uncirculated condition, pieces finer than the present coin are rare. Deep reddish-orange color embraces the minimally abraded and sharply detailed surfaces. The first 8 in the date is clearly repunched. Population: 12 in 64 (2 in 64+), 5 finer (3/15).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25X4, PCGS# 8345, Greysheet# 8925)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
