1878 $5 MS65 NGC. Despite the mintage of nearly 132,000 pieces for the 1878 half eagle issue, Gems are elusive at both of the major services. NGC has seen four submissions including the present lovely piece in Gem grade, and only a single one is finer. This coin shows surfaces that are semiprooflike and thoroughly attractive, glorious yellow-gold and free of major signs of contact. A great-looking and unimprovable coin.(Registry values: P3)
