Description
Very Rare 1878-CC Half Eagle, VF 35
1878-CC VF 35 PCGS. Once considered the second rarest Carson City half eagle in the series (behind only to the 1870-CC), the '78-CC no longer holds that distinction; yet, it is still one of the top rarities in the series. With an original mintage of only 9,054 pieces, only a few coins are still extant, the average grade being VF and possibly unique above XF. While this piece is particularly clean overall, with only one noticeable scratch below star 8, the surfaces are uniformly dull. Better struck than most CC fives with the usual softness on the eagle's neck and the arrow butt.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25X5, PCGS# 8346, Greysheet# 9066)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
