1878-S $5 MS62 NGC. CAC. Mintages of eagles and half eagles began to rise in 1878, and reached historically high levels during the early 1880s. But most '78-S fives grade XF to AU, and the issue is very scarce in MS62. A lustrous sun-gold example with significantly fewer marks than anticipated for its designated grade. Certified in a former generation holder. Census: 17 in 62, 11 finer. CAC: 8 in 62, 3 finer (3/18).(Registry values: P3)
