Description

Underrated Near-Gem 1878-S Half Eagle

1878-S $5 MS64 PCGS. The S mintmark is quite tiny and faint on the reverse, almost as though a punch were used for a smaller denomination. This near-Gem boasts splendid surfaces, rich reddish-gold color with excellent luster. The strike is a tad soft on the portrait of Liberty, but there are no singular marks on either side. An underrated issue at this grade level, despite the moderate mintage of more than 144,000 pieces. Population: 6 in 64, 1 finer (12/12).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25X6, PCGS# 8347, Greysheet# 9067)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
