Description
1878-S Half Eagle, MS65
One of the Two Finest Certified
1878-S $5 MS65 NGC. While moderately available as a date
from a mintage of 144,700 pieces, this San Francisco issue
circulated throughout the West and virtually no examples were
numismatically preserved. Near-Gem coins are rare, and to date just
two pieces are certified MS65 or finer by both services combined --
one at PCGS, and another at NGC. To our knowledge, this is the sole
MS65 at NGC (3/20). Appealing orange-gold surfaces have a smoothly
lustrous sheen, while the lightly frosted devices provide subtle
contrast with the surrounding semireflective fields. A sharp strike
attends all the raised elements. Registry Set enthusiasts will want
to take note -- this is the first Gem 1878-S Liberty five we have
offered in more than 20 years of our archived history.(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25X6, PCGS# 8347, Greysheet# 9067)
