Description
Conditionally Rare 1878-S Five Dollar
1878-S MS 63 PCGS. While not as scarce as earlier S-mint half eagles, the '78-S is quite a challenge in mint condition. This is one of the finest examples known being the only MS 63 certified by PCGS, with one MS 64 higher (10/95). An exceptionally attractive coin, the fields have a bright semi-prooflikeness that enlivens the overall appearance. Also, the coin is accented by rich reddish-coppery patina that surrounds the perimeter of each side and provides a darker frame for the light interior spaces. Fully struck with a few tiny contact marks and a small planchet flake on the reverse.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25X6, PCGS# 8347, Greysheet# 9067)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
