1879 $5 MS64 NGC. Half eagle mintages increased every year from the phenomenally low 1875 issue (200 coins) to the prodigious 1881 mintage (5.7 million coins), but in 1879 the production was a still-moderate 301,950 pieces. This near-Gem survivor displays broad appeal, with gleaming orange-gold surfaces, a bold strike, and a minimum of marks. Census: 18 in 64, 3 finer (4/10).(Registry values: P3)
