Description
Choice 1881/0 Half Eagle
Tied for Finest Known
1881/0 $5 MS64 PCGS. FS-301, formerly FS-005. Actually an
1881/1880, since traces of the initially entered 188 are also
evident. The 1881 has the single highest mintage of the Liberty
half eagle series, which provides more than 200 date and mintmark
combinations. However, the 1881/1880 is very scarce, and an
important rarity at the MS64 level. We suspect the NGC MS64 Census
is inflated by resubmissions, by an owner who attempted to garner
an MS65 assessment not yet given to any example. This is a lustrous
canary-gold near-Gem with a precise strike and only unimportant
marks. Population: 2 in 64, 0 finer (6/09).(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25XD, PCGS# 8355, GSID# 9072)
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
Weight: 8.36 grams
AGW: 0.24188oz
Mintage: 5,708,802
