Description

1881-CC Half Eagle, Elusive AU55
An Above-Average Strike

1881-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Only one die variety is known for the 1881-CC. All known examples have a diagonal die scratch through the ER in LIBERTY. Beginning this year, the mintmark has a different size and shape than on previous Carson City fives. The tall, narrow CC is placed over the V in FIVE with the second C slightly higher. The 1881-CC is one of the rarest Carson City half eagles from the 1880s. Very Fine to lower level About Uncirculated can be located with patience and searching but higher-end AUs are elusive. PCGS and NGC have graded nine pieces in mint condition, mainly MS63 and lower.

Orange-gold patination runs over both sides of this Choice AU example and traces of luster reside in the recessed areas. An above-average strike leaves strong definition on the design features, particularly the hair around Liberty's face and neck, the star centers, and the eagle's wing feathers, all areas that tend to show weakness on most surviving specimens. No mentionable abrasions are apparent, nor are mint-made surface depressions or grease stains that are seen on many examples. A faint, shallow horizontal pinscratch on the cheek only shows at certain angles under a light source. Population: 9 in 55, 10 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25XE, PCGS# 8356, Greysheet# 9073)
