Description

1881-CC Liberty Five, AU58
High-End for the Issue

1881-CC $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. Half eagle production at the Carson City Mint, after topping 51,000 pieces in 1880, plummeted to 13,886 coins in 1881. The latter issue is scarce in all grades and genuinely rare in About Uncirculated. Mint State representatives are exceedingly rare and pose an insurmountable obstacle for many collectors. This still-accessible near-Mint coin displays a bold strike and thoroughly lustrous fields. Only a brush of friction over the high points of the eagle and portrait prevents a full Mint State designation. Light chatter appears in the fields, but there are no singular abrasions. Eye appeal is excellent. Census: 6 in 58, 7 finer (7/16).
