Description

1881-CC Liberty Five, AU58
High-End for This Scarce Issue
CAC Approval

1881-CC $5 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1-A. While the other mints struck half eagles by the millions in 1881, the Nevada mint produced only 13,886 coins -- hardly enough to serve local commercial needs. The combination of low mintage and few Mint State survivors places the 1881-CC half eagle alongside earlier Carson City fives not only in high-grade rarity, but in overall scarcity across all grades. This is one of the few AU58 examples to receive CAC endorsement. The original, orange-gold surfaces are nearly free of bagmarks and abrasions, with only a few faint horizontal lines at Liberty's lower neck. Slight softness at the neck curls and above the eagle's shield is from strike rather than actual wear, although a few signs of brief circulation are seen. Still, this is as impressive an 1881-CC five dollar to be found in an AU58 PCGS holder. Population: 13 in 58, 6 finer. CAC: 5 in 58, 3 finer (10/22).
