Description
1881-CC Near-Mint Five
Absolute and Condition Rarity
1881-CC $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Only one variety is known
of the 1881-CC five, unsurprising since only 13,886 pieces were
produced. This is the second-rarest CC five from the 1880s. At the
AU58 level, it is almost impossible to improve upon. Both major
services have only certified eight coins in mint condition,
representing perhaps four to six individual pieces. This mightily
impressive coin exhibits bright prooflike fields on each side. The
strike is strong throughout, and just a touch of friction is
evident. Numerous small abrasions are scattered about, the only
noteworthy one beneath the eagle's left (facing) wing.(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25XE, PCGS# 8356, Greysheet# 9073)
Weight: 8.36 grams
