Underappreciated in This Grade

1881-S $5 MS65 NGC. The 1881-S half eagle is considered a common date, but it is 90% scarcer than the 1881 and is very rare in Gem condition. Lustrous honey-gold surfaces feature pleasing accents of blue, lilac, and rose color. Both sides showcase strong detail and only microscopic chatter that is virtually indiscernible to the unaided eye. Census: 22 in 65, 2 finer (11/17).(Registry values: P3)
