Description

1882-CC Liberty Half Eagle, MS61
Popular Carson City Type Issue
Scarce in Mint State, Rare with CAC

1882-CC $5 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1-A. While somewhat available in About Uncirculated grades, fully Mint State examples of the 1882-CC half eagle become rare at the MS62 level and virtually unavailable any finer. This lustrous and minimally abraded coin is one of just three CAC-endorsed pieces at the MS61 grade level, and only one piece has achieved CAC approval in any finer grade. Pleasing straw-gold color glows throughout the frosted surfaces.

Unlike most 1882 Carson City survivors, marks are few throughout each side. A loupe reveals infrequent, minor obverse ticks, while a pair short reeding marks exist above the eagle's beak and beneath the left (facing) talons. Struck from clashed dies, Liberty shows only slight weakness at the curls framing the face. The eagle's feathers are bold throughout. Population: 14 in 61, 10 finer. CAC: 3 in 61, 1 finer (7/19).(Registry values: P3)
