Description

1883-CC Liberty Half Eagle, MS62+
CAC, Just One Finer

1883-CC $5 MS62+ PCGS. CAC. Winter 1-A. A single die pair for the issue was necessary as the Carson City Mint issued a diminished mintage of 12,598 half eagles in 1883, which was a magnitude below the 82,817 examples they had produced just the year prior. Today, survivors are scant and seldom seen in higher grades, with an estimated 100-130 coins surviving in all grades, but between just 6-8 of which are believed to be in Uncirculated condition by Rusty Goe. He then further denoted the 1883-CC half eagle as underappreciated in The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, Volume 2, by saying:
"Collectors seeking an example in any grade learn quickly that the stock from which they must choose is sparse. ... While not as elusive as some of the in-very-short-supply 'CC' half eagles from the 1870s, the 1883 date is scarce in its own right. This is especially true regarding Mint State specimens."

PCGS has seen only two MS62+ attributed pieces and only one numerically finer example. The ostensible beauty of this coin is illustrated with its appearance as a CoinFacts plate coin (3/26). Due to the scarcity of the grade, this is our first offering of an MS62+ example and our finest offering of the issue since 2022. The current frontrunner Registry set for Carson City gold coins only has an MS62 example, and the CAC endorsement helps to securely place the current piece as its superior. This example displays alluring tawny gold luster with deeper striations across both fields and devices. There are some minute marks on the coin, though they prove unintrusive to the distinct appeal of the piece.
