Description

Lustrous and Beautifully Patinated Gem 1884 Half Eagle

1884 $5 MS65 PCGS. The 1884 is an underappreciated issue in the Liberty half eagle series and it is also one that is especially difficult to locate in the better grades of Mint State. This is a solid Gem coin, the only piece to be so graded by PCGS with only one coin finer (4/03). What is immediately apparent on this Gem is the rich reddish-coppery patina that is intermixed with pale lilac, the latter color more obvious on the obverse. Additionally, the thick mint luster gives the coin vibrancy and life that would make it an excellent type piece if it weren't such a condition rarity. Sharply struck in all areas, the only mark of any note is a short, vertical nick above Liberty's jawline.
