Description

Attractive 1886-S Five Dollar MS65

1886-S $5 MS65 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint struck no double eagles in this year--the only such gap from 1854 to 1911--but it made up for it with the mintage of more than 3.26 million half eagles, plus a considerable number of eagles. Because of indifferent shipping and storage near the time of production, PCGS has certified only seven coins in MS65, with none finer (7/07). This example shows a bold if not full strike, with ebullient luster over the peach-gold surfaces, and there are relatively few post-strike impairments.(Registry values: P2)
