1889 $5 MS61 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint struck only meager quantities of gold coins in 1889. For the half eagle, just 7,520 business strikes were issued. Most pieces went into circulation, and Uncirculated examples are rare. The present satiny and unbagmarked piece is crisply struck save for the right-side stars. Census: 23 in 61, 27 finer (5/10).(Registry values: P3)
