Description
1890 Half Eagle, Rare MS62
Seldom Offered, Low-Mintage Issue
1890 $5 MS62 PCGS. The small mintage of just 4,240 coins
confirms the Mint's preoccupation with other denominations in 1890,
and the average grade of 53.4 suggests most coins saw at least some
circulation -- a theory supported by the population reports.
Auction appearances are equally scarce. As might be expected, this
survivor was struck with fresh dies with a sharp strike and
prooflike tendencies in the fields. Light chatter and bagmarks in
the field determine the grade, although even at this MS62 level few
coins are finer. Population: 5 in 62, 4 finer (3/16).(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25Y2, PCGS# 8375, Greysheet# 8936)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
