Description

Elusive Gem Quality 1890-CC Five Dollar

1890-CC $5 MS 65 NGC. The '90-CC half eagle in Uncirculated grades is the second most available issue of the denomination from the historic Carson City facility, behind the far more obtainable 1891-CC. Virtually all Mint State survivors are evenly dispersed between the MS 60 and MS 64 grade levels, and number between 200 and 300 coins. The presently offered Gem is one of only a small handful of examples that exceed the MS 64 tier. Vibrant pinkish-gold surfaces display semi-reflective luster that is virtually undisturbed by contact marks and only nominal striking softness can be seen on the eagle's neck feathers. Occasional golden-russet color outlines the left side of the reverse. The collector seeking one of the finest available Carson City half eagles of any date need not look any further. Population: 1 in 65 (1 in 65 at PCGS, 1 finer), none finer (2/00).
