Description

1890-CC Half Eagle, MS64
Seldom Located This Nice

1890-CC $5 MS64 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1-A. The allure of the CC mintmark has long established increased demand for Carson City gold over Philadelphia or San Francisco issues, but in the case of the 1890-CC half eagle, a certain degree of scarcity also contributes to its collector interest. The Nevada facility coined 53,800 pieces, but most experienced extensive circulation and suffered from a high attrition rate. Uncirculated survivors are typically only seen in heavily abraded condition, and rarely is a piece encountered that grades better than MS63; Gem examples are extremely rare. This near-Gem displays frosty yellow-gold luster, with well-struck motifs. A few light grazes in the left obverse field are all that preclude a full Gem assessment from PCGS. Population: 30 in 64, 2 finer (4/15).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25Y3, PCGS# 8376, Greysheet# 9085)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
