Gem 1890-CC Half Eagle
Tied for Finest at NGC

1890-CC $5 MS65 NGC. Although we tend to think of the Comstock Lode as primarily silver, it was also a major producer of gold. Rusty Goe writes in The Mint on Carson Street, "Approximately $2 million worth of gold bullion was produced on the Comstock in 1890 as the last semblance of the prosperity the region enjoyed in the 19th century began to tail off. Almost 100% of this output was deposited at the local mint and turned into coins with a face value of $2.28 million." The 1890-CC half eagles were the first produced there since the 1884-CC and they were struck in relative abundance -- 53,800 pieces. This Gem is tied for finest at NGC with four other submissions and none finer (3/12). This antique-gold piece is well-struck at the peripheries but soft at the high points of each side. Contact marks are minor.(Registry values: P2)
