Description

1893-O Five Dollar, Seldom-Seen MS64
Lustrous Surfaces, Razor-Sharp Strike

1893-O $5 MS64 NGC. Variety 2, showing the date about centered between the denticles and bust truncation, scarcer than Variety 1 with the date lower. The 1893-O half eagle mintage was a fairly skimpy 110,000 coins, and most of the survivors are well-circulated. Most of the surviving mintage is in the XF to AU range. This near-Gem is one of only two such submissions at NGC, and a single piece is finer (12/13). The mellow golden-orange surfaces are highly lustrous and problem-free, with a razor-sharp strike a pleasant surprise. This appears to be the first time we have ever offered an 1893-O in this grade, and this is the first MS64 we know of offered at auction since a Superior sale in 1990. (Registry values: P3)
