Important Near-Gem 1896-S Half Eagle

1896-S $5 MS64 PCGS. The 1896-S is scarce in all grades, and is even more difficult to locate in Mint State than suggested by its low mintage of 155,400 pieces. A solitary MS67 example has been certified by PCGS, but most mere mortals can only aspire to own one of the four MS64 pieces encapsulated by NGC or PCGS. The present well struck near-Gem has canary-gold toning and an exceptionally preserved reverse.(Registry values: P3)
