Outstanding 1897 Half Eagle, MS66
1897 $5 MS66 NGC. Despite a mintage of over 800,000 pieces, the 1897 is not as available in Gem as many of the later date issues. Garrett and Guth (2006) report that the finest they have seen is an NGC MS66 specimen that sold at auction nearly a decade ago. This delightful piece is tied for the finest certified and NGC reports just nine coins in MS66, with none finer. PCGS has certified none above MS65, at which level they have graded a dozen examples (8/08). Pleasing yellow-orange patina endows the surfaces, which exhibit only minuscule handling marks. Eye-catching satiny luster enhances the wonderful eye appeal. (Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25YM, PCGS# 8394, GSID# 8943)
