Description
1897 Half Eagle, MS66
Impeccable Surfaces, Excellent for Type
1897 $5 MS66 PCGS. The large mintage approaching 900,000
circulation strikes combined with a good survival means that this
issue can occasionally be found in Gem condition or finer, as here.
The present Premium Gem shows thick mint frost dominating surfaces
that are virtually unabraded, as expected at this grade level. The
only noticeable marks are all faint, on the chin of Liberty and in
the field above the eagle's head. The strike is sharp in the
centers but slightly soft on peripheral stars. This late-19th
century date in impeccable condition might be a viable alternative
for type purposes to the usual selections from the first decade of
the 20th century, such as the 1900, 1901-S, or 1907. Population: 2
in 66, 0 finer (9/12).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25YM, PCGS# 8394, Greysheet# 8943)
Weight: 8.36 grams
