Description
1897-S Half Eagle, MS67
Elusive Condition Rarity
Tied for Finest Certified
1897-S $5 MS67 PCGS. CAC. We offered an MS68 PCGS 1897-S
half eagle in January 2005, with one MS64 next in line as the
finest examples we have ever offered. That amazing MS68 no longer
appears on the PCGS Population Report. That service has only
certified 57 Mint State examples of this moderate mintage issue.
The current records report three MS67 examples as the finest that
PCGS has certified (7/14). This Superb Gem has exquisite surfaces
with brilliant satin surfaces exhibiting exceptional orange gold
luster. A few amazing examples of various San Francisco Mint half
eagles survive since they were acquired, often directly from the
mint in the year of issue.(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25YN, PCGS# 8395, Greysheet# 9097)
