Description
1898-S Half Eagle, Semiprooflike Gem
Rare in This Condition
1898-S $5 MS65 NGC. Even though the 1898-S half eagle was
struck in an amount approaching 1.4 million coins, Choice examples
are scarce, and Gems are rare. (The Clapp-Eliasberg MS68 PCGS coin,
the finest known, was likely obtained directly from the San
Francisco Mint in the year of issue.) The present Gem is tied for
the finest we have handled since we began our Permanent Auction
Archives in 1993. Both sides are fully struck, with no mentionable
contact, bright semiprooflike fields, and impeccable orange-gold
color. Census: 12 in 65, 2 finer (9/12).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25YR, PCGS# 8397, Greysheet# 9098)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
