Description

1898-S Five Dollar, MS65+
Conditionally Challenging

1898-S $5 MS65+ NGC. The 1898-S has a respectable mintage of close to 1.4 million pieces, and can be located with minimal effort in AU55 to MS63 grades. Near-Gems are undeniably scarce, and fully Gem examples are rare. The present well-struck, orange-gold Liberty five dollar has remarkably smooth fields, and the portrait is likewise nearly free from contact. A brief, hair-thin strike-through on the cheek does not impact the technical grade. Census: 11 in 65 (1 in 65+), 6 finer (5/24).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25YR, PCGS# 8397, Greysheet# 9098)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
