Description
1898-S Half Eagle, Frosty MS66
Major Condition Rarity
1898-S $5 MS66 NGC. The 1898-S half eagle is somewhat
scarcer in Mint State than its mintage of nearly 1.4 million coins
might suggest. Moreover, most such pieces grade no better than than
MS64. Gems are scarce, and high-end examples such as the currently
offered Premium Gem are extremely rare. We have offered a pair of
remarkable MS68 coins in the past as well as a handful of Gems, but
this is the first Premium Gem 1898-S half eagle we have handled in
more than two decades. The strike is bold throughout each side, and
the frosty surfaces are seemingly flawless. The interiors glow with
warm honey-gold hues, while a frame of greenish-gold color
surrounds the peripheries. Census: 3 in 66, 2 finer
(11/15).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25YR, PCGS# 8397, Greysheet# 9098)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
