Description

1898-S Half Eagle, Magnificent MS68
One of Four Examples Known
The Sole CAC-Endorsed Coin

1898-S $5 MS68 PCGS Secure. CAC. The 1898-S half eagle comes from a production of nearly 1.4 million pieces. The PCGS/NGC population, showing more than 1,150 submissions of the 1898-S, indicates that this issue is available in most levels of preservation, including circulated and mint condition through MS63. Near-Gems are scarce, showing a population of 61 examples. Higher-grade specimens are rare; specifically, the two services report 17 Gems, four Premium Gems, one MS67, and four MS68 submissions, with none finer (5/15).

The present offering is one of the four finest certified 1898-S five dollar gold pieces. It is significant that it is the only one of the four MS68s that is endorsed by CAC. Both sides radiate blazing mint luster from yellow-gold surfaces imbued with whispers of soft orange, yellowish-green, pink, and rose patination. All design features exhibit razor-sharp definition, and both surfaces are immaculately preserved, revealing no significant copper spots, toning streaks, die cracks, or planchet defects. We mention a few trivial, unobtrusive marks only to aid future catalogers and researchers who will wish to identify this gorgeous coin. These include a tick just to the left of Liberty's chin, a series of minute marks left of star 12, an apricot toning spot left of star 13, and a minuscule field mark between the I in AMERICA and the middle arrowhead. This unimprovable coin will serve as the centerpiece of a high-grade Liberty Head half eagle collection. The specialist in this field may have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire this magnificent condition rarity. Population: 2 in 68, 0 finer (5/15).(Registry values: P2)
