Rarely Seen This Fine
1900-S $5 MS67 PCGS. While San Francisco minted the bulk of
the double eagles coined in 1900, the mintage of the 1900-S half
eagles dropped to just 329,000 pieces. The 1900-S half eagle is
conditionally rare in Gem. This outstanding Superb Gem is the sole
PCGS entry at MS67, and although PCGS reports one coin at MS68 and
two MS69 examples, we're not aware of any auction appearances of
these three half eagles since 2003 (3/26).The richly frosted surfaces of this half eagle are vibrant green-gold with occasional peach shadings close to the margins. Liberty's cheek is smooth and a bold strike provides razor-sharp details throughout her curls. The reverse is equally impressive, with coruscating fields that yield exceptional eye appeal. A loupe reveals a tiny thread strikethrough under the eagle's right (facing) wing that is not distracting (as struck). This Superb Gem is an important opportunity for Registry collectors and gold specialists alike.(Registry values: N7079)
