Description
Exceptional 1901-S Five Dollar, MS66
1901-S $5 MS66 NGC. The 1901-S five dollar has a mintage of 3.648 million pieces, and shows a relatively high survival rate. Walter Breen (1988) writes that the issue is: "Plentiful in choice Unc. from old hoards." The NGC/PCGS population data corroborate this. Premium Gem and finer coins, however, are another matter, as the population figures below indicate. This MS66 example displays dazzling luster and attractive peach-gold surfaces imbued with tints of light green. An attentive strike imparts complete definition to the design elements, and a few trivial marks may well preclude an even higher grade. Census: 73 in 66, 14 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25YX, PCGS# 8404, GSID# 9102)
