Description

Difficult Near-Gem 1905-S Five Dollar

1905-S $5 MS64 PCGS. A lovely peach-gold representative that has unexpectedly clean fields, especially on the reverse. Only a hair-thin mark on the jaw denies classification as a full Gem. The 1905-S is significantly scarcer in Mint State than its mintage suggests. Presumably, most of the mintage was released into local circulation, unlike the 1905, which was likely held as bank reserves. Population: 21 in 64, 4 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25Z7, PCGS# 8412, Greysheet# 9106)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
