Description

1906-S Five Dollar Gold, MS65
Undervalued Issue

1906-S $5 MS65 NGC. According to Garrett and Guth, "Although the 1906-S half eagle is not rare in most grades, it is certainly underpriced in the higher states of preservation. The date sells for a very small premium, but it is many times rarer than the 1901-S and 1903-S half eagles." Their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins was written in 2006. Today, the two services combined have certified just eight coins numerically finer than this MS65 example -- far scarcer than most "common" date half eagles. This highly lustrous representative is fully struck and an attractive, satiny honey-gold coin, still undervalued for its low population in Gem condition. Census: 9 in 65, 3 finer (7/14).(Registry values: N2998)
