Description
1908 Liberty Head Half Eagle, MS67
Last Date of Design, Only Two Certified Finer
1908 $5 MS67 PCGS. CAC. The year 1908 saw the transition
from the venerable Liberty Head half eagle to the new Indian
design. Type collectors prize the 1908 Liberty issue, as it is the
last date of the design and examples in high grade are not too
difficult to locate. Of course, at the Superb Gem level the date is
very rare. Current population data from the grading services bears
this out, as PCGS has certified seven coins in MS67, with one
finer, while NGC has graded only five examples at the Superb Gem
level, with one finer (8/10). The present coin is a magnificent
Superb Gem, with pleasing yellow-gold surfaces and blazing mint
luster. All design elements display razor-sharp detail, with the
strands of Liberty's hair fully separated and every eagle's feather
distinct. The fields are virtually pristine and eye appeal is
unsurpassed.(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25ZE, PCGS# 8418, GSID# 8954)
